2003 saw the return of Voltron in comic book form. Published by Devil's Due Studios and written primarily by Dan "wait and see" Jolley, the comic initially started off with a 6-part mini-series, known as "Volume One: Revelations", before becoming a monthly series in January 2004, which is known as "Volume Two: Paradise Lost".
The comic was a hit with fans, myself included, and has showcased the art talents of Mike Norton, Clint Hilinksi, EJ Su, Clayton Brown and Mark Brooks. The comic put a new spin on the Voltron legacy without being disrespectful to it's origins, and has introduced many new fans to Voltron.
Unfortunately the comic came to a sudden end with Volume 2, Issue #11 due to dwindling sales caused by poor publicity, an inconsistent release schedule, and declining art quality after Volume 2, Issue #8. This left the new story arc in Volume 2, Issue #11 unfinished and also forced the Zarkon backstory, which was originally planned to be five parts, to come to an end in part two.
All issues of the comic were re-published in the Voltron Omnibus, which was released in March this year. The Omnibus also features a newly written and drawn issue that was made specifically for it in order to close the previously unfinished story arcs and bring a degree of closure to the comic.
Devil's Due aren't done with Voltron comics yet though. Starting in July this year they'll be releasing a five-part mini-series called "Voltron: A Legend Forged". The mini-series will chronicle the origin of Voltron. |
